The demands and needs of our presently increasing population require that the social decisions for land use must be based on the best and most reliable information that the decision-makers can obtain. Growing mass of natural resource information should be presented in a concise and practical form which the planners and public administrators can readily use without a need to learn about natural resources in detail. One of the means to present this information is a resource evaluation system which consists of four levels of maps: basic resource maps, single-factor maps, limiting-factor maps and final land suitability maps. The basic process used in the system is developing a series of individual maps showing specific kinds of information and superimposing them to identify a degree of suitability for a specific land use. The authors provide an overview of the use of land suitability maps in land use planning in the United States; show what natural resource data planners can require and put to use; outline the way in which earth scientists can evaluate and present the data needed; and finally demonstrate the land suitability analysis by case studies. Also briefly discussed is the need for information other than earth-science data. Land use planning and decision-making process is an intricate mixture of scientific, engineering, ecological, sociological, economic, cultural and political factors and forces. Obvious as it may seem this fact is nevertheless often ignored in practice resulting in misunderstandings and mutual disbelief of parties involved.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the adaptability of marine mussels Mytilus edulis of increasing age to induced stress and subsequent recovery. Lysosomes, present in large numbers in the molluscan digestive gland, play a major role in intracellular digestion, and the stability of their membranes provides a sensitive biomarker for generalised cell injury which is correlated with the stress response of the whole animal. Lysosomal stability was measured in mussels of three age groups (2–4, 6–8 and ≥ 10 years) during exposure to hypoxia/hyperthermia and, in a separate experiment, to copper (50 ppb: where billion = 109). The lysosomal reactions of all three age groups to both experimental stressors were similar. However, recovery from the induced pathological reactions was most pronounced in the youngest animals and least apparent in the oldest group. These findings indicate that the stress reaction is independent of age but that the potential for recovery of lysosomal integrity is age-related.  相似文献

 Pliocene–Recent volcanic outcrops at Seal Nunataks and Beethoven Peninsula (Antarctic Peninsula) are remnants of several monogenetic volcanoes formed by eruption of vesiculating basaltic magma into shallow water, in an englacial environment. The diversity of sedimentary and volcanic lithofacies present in the Antarctic Peninsula outcrops provides a clear illustration of the wide range of eruptive, transportational and depositional processes which are associated with englacial Surtseyan volcanism. Early-formed pillow lava and glassy breccia, representing a pillow volcano stage of construction, are draped by tephra erupted explosively during a tuff cone stage. The tephra was resedimented around the volcano flanks, mainly by coarse-grained sediment gravity flows. Fine-grained lithofacies are rare, and fine material probably bypassed the main volcanic edifice, accumulating in the surrounding englacial basin. The pattern of sedimentation records variations in eruption dynamics. Products of continuous-uprush eruptions are thought to be represented by stacks of poorly bedded gravelly sandstone, whereas better bedded, lithologically more diverse sequences accumulated during periods of quiescence or effusive activity. Evidence for volcano flank failure is common. In Seal Nunataks, subaerial lithofacies (mainly lavas and cinder cone deposits) are volumetrically minor and occur at a similar stratigraphical position to pillow lava, suggesting that glacial lake drainage may have occurred prior to or during deposition of the subaerial lithofacies. By contrast, voluminous subaerial effusion in Beethoven Peninsula led to the development of laterally extensive stratified glassy breccias representing progradation of hyaloclastite deltas. Results are presented for the radio-, cathodo- and ionoluminescence (RL, CL and IL) of an ordered, exsolved alkali feldspar from South Greenland (BM2). BM2, a microperthite typical of many evolved rocks, has a broad red near-infrared luminescence, which, using lifetime-resolved CL, reveals four overlapping emissions, of which two are dominant. These derive from Fe3+-activated luminescence from the low albite and maximum microcline components of the microperthite in which the Fe is on the most ordered tetrahedral site. The temperature dependence of the emission shows a smooth change from longer wavelengths at 20 K to shorter values at room temperature. There is a broad relationship between Fe-O bond distance and the energy of the luminescence. Comparisons of RL, CL and IL allow features in the luminescence associated with surface states to be identified. The dependence of red RL intensity versus temperature is divided into four regions for which the activation energies and temperature ranges are estimated. Variations in RL intensity between 67 and 225 K are interpreted as a phase transition in microcline. RL intensity indicates a multi-stage transformation, proceeding via a first step between 67 and ~100 K in which luminescence intensity increases, followed by a region between 100 and ~225 K in which intensity falls. A discontinuity in intensity at ~225 K marks the end of the second region. These variations may result from changes in the bond angles of bridging oxygens. IL dose dependence studies have been performed. As implantation progresses, the red/IR emission profile skews towards short wavelengths, reflecting amorphisation of the structure and local variations in Fe-O bond distances. If the sample recovers for 24 h, the luminescence profile partly returns to its original state, but remains skewed, reflecting partial resumption of short-range order. Such profiles are also observed from natural shocked feldspars, and it may be that ion beam damage is akin to structural modifications associated with impact events. Ion implantation also causes the formation or enhancement of UV, blue and yellow emissions. Recovery of the sample over 24 h causes the UV and blue emissions to be greatly reduced, whereas the yellow emission may be enhanced. Tentative interpretations of this behaviour are presented.  相似文献

The orientation dependence of the luminescence of a well-characterized plagioclase crystal at room temperature and 40 K is reported. A beam of H + ions was used to provide the excitation. Ion beam luminescence provides emissions effectively from the bulk of the material, and therefore minimizes the contribution to the luminescence from atypical regions. The intensity of the luminescence is strongly orientation-dependent. The intensity and photon energy, particularly of the red/infrared and yellow emission bands, vary significantly. We interpreted this as resulting from Fe 3+ and Mn 2+ activator ions, respectively, on crystallographic sites with low point symmetry. An emission at 860 nm was also significantly orientation-dependent. The blue luminescence showed the least variability. At room temperature, a 350 nm near-UV emission was noted, whereas at 40 K, emissions were at 240, 260, 300 and 340 nm. UV emissions may result from Na + diffusion along interfaces within the plagioclase, notably albite-law (010) twins. This variability has significant consequences for the use of single-crystal quantitative luminescence techniques. We have also studied the dependence of the peak intensities and profiles during prolonged ion beam bombardment with heavier (He +) ions. Broadening of the red-infrared emission is interpreted as reflecting growing amorphization of the sample.  相似文献

Hyaloclastites develop where lava interacts with water resulting in deposits that have a unique and often complex range of petrophysical properties. A combination of eruptive style and emplacement environment dictates the size, geometry and distribution of different hyaloclastite facies and their associated primary physical properties such as porosity, permeability and velocity. To date, links between the 3D facies variability within these systems and their petrophysical properties remain poorly understood. Hjörleifshöfði in southern Iceland presents an exceptional outcrop exposure of an emergent hyaloclastite sequence >1 km wide by >200 m high and enables an investigation of the distribution of the hyaloclastite deposits at seismic scale. Within this study we present a photogrammetry-based 3D model from part of this recent hyaloclastite delta and incorporate previous work by Watton et al. (Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 2013, 250, 19) to undertake detailed facies interpretation and quantification. Laboratory petrophysical analyses were performed on 34 core plugs cut from key field facies samples, including P- and S-wave velocity, density, porosity and permeability at both ambient and confining pressure. Integration of the 3D model with the petrophysical data has enabled the production of pseudo-wireline logs and property distribution maps which demonstrate the variability of physical properties within hyaloclastite sequences at outcrop to seismic scale. Through comparison of our data with examples of older buried hyaloclastite sequences we demonstrate that the wide-ranging properties of young hyaloclastites become highly uniform in older sequences making their identification by remote geophysical methods for similar facies variations more challenging. Our study provides an improved understanding of the petrophysical property distribution within hyaloclastite sequences and forms a valuable step towards improving the understanding of similar subsurface sequences and their implications for imaging and fluid flow.  相似文献

Aerosol samples were collected and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations at five supersaturations were measured along and off the central California coast within the cloud-topped, marine boundary layer from aircraft flights during August 2007. Receptor modelling has been applied to estimate the natural versus anthropogenic source contribution of cloud condensation nuclei in this region, a region of climatically important marine stratocumulus. The results suggest that anthropogenic CCN accounted for about 50% of the CCN active at 0.3% supersaturation in this region during the measurement period.  相似文献

A correlation log is a type of sonar system used for measuring the velocity of a surface vessel or of a submersible vehicle. The operation is similar to that of a conventional echo sounder, and the direction of acoustic propagation is vertically downwards. Since a correlation log can be used for either bottom tracking or water tracking, it is of interest to relate the transmitted power level to the echo levels from both bottom and volume scatterers, which is a means of predicting the log's performance. Many types of mixing model are used widely within the earth sciences to determine the electrical properties of porous media consisting of solid and fluid phases of known conductivities, volume fractions and distributions (i.e. phase connectivities). Most models are valid for two or more conducting phases. However, of the simple models only Archie’s law includes a variable term, the Archie cementation exponent m, that describes the connectivity of the phases. Unfortunately, Archie’s law is only valid for one conducting phase distributed within a non-conducting phase, which makes it inapplicable in instances where the rock matrix has a significant conductivity such as for clay-rich rocks and in calculations involving partial melting. More complex models exist which account for multiple conducting phases and control over phase conductivity. We have adapted the conventional Archie’s law to produce a simple modified Archie’s law that can be used with two conducting phases of any conductivity and any volume fraction, while retaining the ability to model variable connectivities within those phases that result from variations in their distribution. The modified model has two exponents (m and p) that describe the connectivity of each of the two phases. The exponents are related through an equation that depends also on the volume fractions of the two phases. The modified and the conventional versions of Archie’s law have been tested on a granular analogue porous medium with a conducting matrix and a pore space saturated with a range of saline fluids with different salinities and conductivities. The new model describes the experimentally determined electrical behaviour of the system extremely well, improving greatly on the conventional Archie’s law.  相似文献
